Sikkim, in den östlichen Ausläufern des Himalaya gelegen, war bis 1975 ein buddhistisches Königreich. Danach wurde es an die Indische Union angegliedert. Trotz entscheidender Veränderungen spielt die tibetische Klosterkultur noch immer eine herausragende Rolle. Neben dem Charme der hillstations aus der Kolonialzeit fasziniert das hier ansässige Völkergemisch unterschiedlicher Herkunft und Religion. Auf engstem Raum findet man eine abwechslungsreiche Landschaft: Terrassenfelder und Teeplantagen, Tropenwald und Regenwald, Hochgebirgsflora und schneebedeckte Himalayagipfel, darunter der Kanchenjunga, der dritthöchste Berg der Erde. Das üppige Grün ist die Heimat vieler verschiedener Orchideen und zahlreicher Rhododendronarten.
Die Autoren haben das wenig bekannte Land mehrmals zu verschiedenen Jahreszeiten bereist. Die Region ist durch ihr Straßennetz gut erschlossen, und immer mehr Naturlandschaften werden auch ausländischen Touristen zugänglich gemacht. Die Einheimischen begegnen dem Fremden freundlich und mit der gleichen Neugier, mit der ein Reisender ihre Heimat besucht. Je mehr man sich zu Fuß von der Zivilisation entfernt, desto eindrucksvoller sind diese Begegnungen und desto intensiver die Erlebnisse.

Sikkim lies in the eastern ridges of the Himalayas. It was a Buddhist kingdom until 1975 when it became annexed to the Indian Union. In spite of enormous changes since that time, the Tibetan culture of the monasteries continues to play an important role. The charm of the hillstations from the times of colonialism combined with the mixture of peoples of different origins and religions are fascinating. Within a limited geographical area one finds a varied landscape: terraced fields and tea gardens, tropical forest and rain forest, the flora of high mountains and the snow-capped summits of the Himalayas including Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. The lush greens are home to a variety of orchids and numerous species of rhododendrons.
The authors have travelled several times during different seasons in this little known country. The road system of the region is well extended and increasingly nature reserves are opened up to foreign tourists. The local people are friendly and as curious about the travellers visiting their hidden country as we are about them and their way of life. The farther one walks away from civilization, the encounters with the people of Sikkim become more impressive and the experiences highly intensive.

Plus on s'éloigne, à pied, de la civilisation, plus ces rencontres sont impressionnantes et plus ces expériences vécues deviennent intensives.
